Windows XP systems missing or prefixed with gray dot in Agent Deployment Center
Question:
Why doesn't my Windows XP workstation appear in the Agent Deployment Center? When it does appear why is it prefixed with a gray dot?
Answer:
There are many reasons why this can happen, most of which involve Windows file sharing security. After following the steps below rescan the Windows Network again to see if your Window XP system shows up with a red dot next to it.
1. Install and enable the Client for Microsoft Networks on this workstation if it is not already installed and enabled. This can be done by going to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right-click Local Area Connection and pick Properties. Click the Install button, highlight Client, and click the Add button. Select Client for Microsoft Networks and press the OK button. By default this client is installed and enabled by Windows.
2. Install and enable File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks on this workstation if it is not already installed and enabled. This can be done by going to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right-click Local Area Connection and pick Properties. Click the Install button, highlight Service, and click the Add button. Select File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and press the OK button. By default this service is installed and enabled by Windows.
3. Add File and Printer Sharing to the Windows XP Firewall Exceptions List. This can be done by going to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions. Check File and Printer Sharing and press the OK button if it is not already checked.
4. If your Windows XP workstation is a member of a workgroup instead of a domain, disable Simple File Sharing. This can be done by going to Start > Search > Tools > Folder Options > View. Uncheck Use simple file sharing (Recommended) and press the OK button.
Rescan your Windows Network in the Agent Deployment Center. This can be done by right-clicking Windows Networking in the Agent Deployment Center sidebar and choosing Refresh. Your Windows XP workstation should now appear with a red dot in front of it. Right-click it and choose Install Agent.
If the push install of the LANrev agent fails with a Deployment Result of "The service did not start due to a logon failure. (Error=1069)," verify that the credentials that you specified in the Deployment Center settings tab have access to the remote XP workstation.
- Log out of the admin console machine and log back in under the same credentials you entered in the Deployment Center settings tab. Note that this account must have administrator privileges on the remote XP workstation.
- Connect to the hidden administrative share (C$) on the remote Windows XP workstation. This can be done by going to Start > Run. In the Open field enter the UNC path to the hidden administrative share on the remote XP machine (e.g. \\<xp_client>\C$ replacing <xp_client> with the name of the remote XP workstation).
If you are able to successfully connect and see the contents of the C: drive of the remote Windows XP workstation, this means you have entered the account information wrong in the Deployment Center settings tab. If you are in a domain environment, remember to prefix your domain admin account with the domain name (e.g. \\domain\administrator). Check your spelling for this account's information in the Deployment Center settings tab.
If you are unsuccessful in connecting to the hidden administrative share (C$) on the remote Windows XP workstation, it means that the account you have specified does not have sufficient permissions or rights to access the hidden administrative share. Specify another account with admin privileges on the remote Windows XP workstation or add this account to the Domain Admins global group.
Make the required changes as suggested above and you should be able to successfully push install the LANrev agent to your remote Window XP workstations.
