MDAC Security Update (KB832483) continues to appear in Missing OS Patches after successful install

Question:

Why does the "Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components (KB832483)" OS patch continue to appear in Missing Patches for my Windows 2000 SP4 clients even though I've already accepted this update package?

Answer:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-003 provides a list of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) versions this patch applies to.

• Microsoft Data Access Components 2.5 Service Pack 2
• Microsoft Data Access Components 2.5
• Microsoft Data Access Components 2.6 Service Pack 2
• Microsoft Data Access Components 2.7
• Microsoft Data Access Components 2.7 Service Pack 1
• Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8

In reality, however, this patch can appear in the list of required updates for any version of MDAC. If the current version of MDAC on your client computer is not on the above list, the installer for this update will report that the installation was successful when in fact the installer did nothing. The next time you check again for available updates this patch will continue to appear again and again in the list of Missing Patches regardless of the number of times you approve it by adding it to the list of Accepted Patches.

For example, this tends to happen on Windows 2000 SP4 systems running MDAC 2.53 (MDAC 2.5 with SP3 KB911562) applied before KB832483. This version of MDAC is not in the list for which this patch applies, but the patch appears anyway on the list of Missing Updates for this system. This is due to a bug in Windows Update and not LANrev.

To resolve this problem upgrade your MDAC to one of the versions listed above in MS Security Bulletin MS04-003 (such as 2.8) and apply the patch again (but only if needed though because according to our experience MDAC 2.8 does not require this patch any more even though it appears in the above list). The "Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components (KB832483)" OS patch should no longer appear in the list of Missing Patches after this.
