A: Below are some best practices for defining licensing specifications. These also apply for software package installation conditions.
1. Whenever possible try to use "Path" instead of "Name" as the primary identification criteria in licensing specifications. Then add other secondary criteria such as file version to narrow down and more positively identify your application. This will greatly reduce the overhead in enforcing the licensing specification since the agent will only check that location for the file instead of scanning the entire hard drive. LANrev evaluates the identification criteria in the order they are displayed in the License tab.
2. Only use Checksum as the last identification criteria and never by itself. Generating a checksum is an expensive operation and should only be used as an identification criteria of last resort.
3. Environment variables such %SYSTEMROOT% are valid and can be used in the "Path" identification criteria so you can use the same licensing specification on different OSes where a file is stored in slightly different locations that can be made identical with the use of an environment variable.
